Texas jury awards $43 million to a woman injured by Rezulin, December 21, 2001
However after the award the maker of Rezulin, and the injured woman agreed to settle for an undisclosed amount. The parties settled three hours after a Nueces County Texas jury awarded a local woman and her family $43 million for damage to her liver caused by Rezulin. The injured woman's lawyers suggested the family receive about $1.5 billion from the company.
Parke-Davis Inc., Warner-Lambert Co., Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Ltd. and Pfizer Inc. were named as defendants in the lawsuit.Warner-Lambert had merged with its former rival Pfizer in February 2000.
The claims center on a 63-year-old woman named Margarita Sanchez, who argued that her liver was damaged by the drug. Her liver was allegdely damaged by the potent drug and she is on a waiting list for a liver transplant. The case tried to show how the manufacturers engaged in a cover-up of dangerous rezulin vside effects effects.
However, earlier in December 2001 in Houston, the first trial about Rezulin-linked complications ended with a Harris County jury ruling in favor of Warner-Lambert. In that case, a 58-year-old woman who had Type 2 diabetes died after using Rezulin.

Pfizer, which acquiredWarner-Lambert in June 2000, told news agenices it was pleased with the court's decision and that it will defend all remaining Rezulin suits. The case was brought Montgomery county Circuit Court in Rockville, Maryland.
Pfizer is also appealing the January Texas jury's verdict in another Warner-Lambert suit in which $23.46 million in compensatory damages were given to survivors of Beatrice Herrera.
